Science of the country life- “Old Wives tales” Part 1
Old wives tales vs. Science. Believe it or not, science has been studied in the country for many years by the educated and uneducated alike. This science is not exactly science, but it is science. I hope you will understand in a few minutes. This science is also just a collective version of old wives tales passed down. I would have loved for all of you to have met my great grandmother Maw, a strong beloved woman with a lot of wisdom to share. Most of what I will share with you will be the wisdom passed down to me from my grandmothers and my mother. Some of these old wives tales have a bit of science behind them that make logical sense, others lack fact, except for the fact that momma said so and that is fact enough.
Old wives tales started many generations ago. Using old wives tales you could improve your health, prevent pregnancy, predict the weather, and so much more. Many people mistake old wives tales for old wise tales, but that is simply wrong. Old wives tales are past down from the older women in the family or community to the young women, hence the name. My great grandmother told my grand mother who told my mom who told me, “It’s going to rain. The leaves are turning up. When the leaves are thirsty, they turn up to get rain water.” and sure enough less than an hour later, it rained. I had never heard of that before, and my mother told me that about 4 days ago. That may not be science, but it sure took someone to notice that much like it took someone to notice mold can be used in making a antibiotic medication. Knowing this I hope you will see in the following days how old wives tales my have evolved from some sort of actual science. In a less advanced past, people used these sayings to better their lives, and life went on, they lived to tell the tales. I will continue to share old wives tales soon, but do the research, fact or fiction some just make you think.
